The 21st Century NREN is no longer just ‘nice to have’ but has truly become mission critical with users ranging from young children to particle physicists. It is crucial to strike the appropriate balance between global and local approaches to optimise value and be broader than simply a niche ‘pipe provider’. In the UK research and education now stand at a critical point in their development if they are to capture the valuable opportunities that centrally provided services can deliver. The future will not be limited by technology, only by how adventurous, innovative and collaborative we are prepared to be.
