Profile: Michael Stanton was raised in England. Since completing his PhD in mathematics at Cambridge University in 1971, he has taught computing and its applications at three Brazilian universities. In 1994 he was appointed professor of computer networking at the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF). His passion for communications networks dates from 1986, and he played an leading role in the early development of research networking in Brazil. Since 2001 he has been Director of Innovation at RNP (the Brazilian NREN), responsible for oversight of R&D and new networking projects. He is currently technical coordinator of CLARA, the Latin American equivalent of TERENA.
